Becoming Mother in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House

A counterargument to the traditional female gothic reading of the titular Hill House in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a “mother house” that threatens to consume Eleanor. This paper suggests that Hill House is instead a “motherless house,” and that Eleanor ultimately discovers her own desire to be a mother rather than chase the illusion of childish frivolity.
